TIDASA helps unemployed youth in KwaZulu-NatalTIDASA, the Training and Instructional Design Academy of South Africa, together with the UThungulu Community Foundation (UCF) and the Zululand Community and Business Forum (ZCBF), is providing free training to a group of 15 unemployed students from the Zululand region. TIDASA, a private FET college, has enrolled the learners in the National Certificate in End-User Computing (ISETT SETA, NQF level 3). The year-long course consists of 14 modules. In addition to training on the full Microsoft Office 2007 suite, the course includes modules such as Business Administration, Communication Skills, Basic Project Management, and HIV/AIDS in the Workplace. As it is a distance-learning programme, the students will be provided with their books, tutorials, and assignments, and will be required to study the material in their own time. The first semester started on Monday 19 July 2010 with the registration process, where the students received their first set of books and assignments. There will be a week-long contact session per semester.
The students were chosen from over 120 applications received after an advert/article was placed in the Bay Watch newspaper by Mr Chris Mkhize of the UCF. In order to apply, students had to have a matric and be unemployed. After a rigorous selection process, 15 students were chosen. TIDASA is covering the cost of the learning material and the facilitators’ time, as well as registering the learners on the National Learner Records Database. TIDASA is liaising with the ZCBF to provide a venue free of charge for the contact sessions. Dr Nicky Kruger, Principal of TIDASA, says, “This free training is part of TIDASA’s drive to fulfill the Minister of Higher Education and Training’s request that colleges work with the private sector and other higher education institutions to find solutions to the problem of unemployed youth in South Africa. With the high unemployment in the Zululand area, TIDASA wishes to do all it can to promote youth employability in the region.” TIDASA appeals to the business community of Zululand for sponsorship to assist these 15 students achieve their certificates. Assistance with providing computers for the learners to practice and complete the assignments is urgently needed. We are looking for organisations that are able either to provide the students with access to computers to practice on, or with good, second-hand computers. If anyone is able to assist in any way or would like to know more about the training, please contact Mr Chris Mkhize (UCF) on 035 797 1882 or Ms Helga Van Wyk (TIDASA) on 031 903 7437 (during office hours). There is an urgent need for this training in the Zululand region, and TIDASA would like to expand this programme to develop as many learners as possible. If anyone is able to sponsor a bursary, please contact either Helga or Chris.
